Settling in

So after several weeks, we're starting to actually settle in.

Looks like it did in the store!

The bed fits perfectly between the two windows.

Just wait until he gets his bath in it...

These blinds took forever to install!

The End...

Well, it's been a hectic six months, but here we are! The house is now done, and the only things the builder needs to take care of are a few cosmetic scratches in the drywall. After going through and doing a final inspection today to ensure everything's in order, we're set to move in this Friday.

The shiny new wood floors. The entryway light looks like a UFO probe of some sort.

Interesting shot of the first-floor powder room.

It's 50 degrees in the middle of winter in sunny, exotic Virginia!

Doug's tax break - I mean, office

A first look at how well the kitchen flooring and counters match. Not bad for going off of tiny sample squares in a showroom five months ago!

Finishing touches

Okay, so our biggest shock this week is that they put in the grass! We thought they'd wait until Spring to do it. I hope it doesn't die...

Also, note the single tree and shrubs. So much for putting in AstroTurf to simplify yard work!

It's funny because it's supposed to be 45.

The interesting-looking light fixture.

All of the electrical and water hookups have been turned on. The builders are keeping the place at a balmy 80 degrees. Good thing the utilities aren't my problem until March!

Some drawer-thingies in the cabinets.

A well-lit master bathroom. Nothing wakes you up faster than having your corneas seared with bright lighting!

Don't you just love that new-carpet smell? All of the wood floors and carpeting are in. Thankfully, they put down plastic and cardboard to keep it from getting scratched, which is bound to happen with people who mix up '45' with '54'.

The following picture has nothing to do with our house:

The home stretch

With only 27 days until settlement, it's really starting to look less like a construction site and more like a home!

First is the outside - they've added some moulding above the door and around the windows. Also, they poured the stairs and the sidewalk in front of the house.

The banisters have also been installed - these are supposed to match the custom cabinets, which doesn't really make much sense.

The upstairs bathroom. All the tile work is in!

The dining room, and the solitary chandelier that makes us feel fancier than we really are.

The center island and the kitchen - note Jen's expensive cabinets!

And some finishing touches... me installing the SurroundSound system.

What does this button do?

And finally, the bed that we picked out. We've managed to never buy a bed while in college; this made moving from apartment to apartment easier, but complicated sleeping somewhat. We also got a dining room table that we're keeping in pieces at Jen's parents' place until we move in.

Siding and walls

As of today, the drywall's done!

And up goes the siding

Yesterday was our pre-drywall walkthrough with our builder. Everything is coming along really great, and there were only a few issues that needed to be addressed. Much to our surprise, they predict that the house will be done several weeks early!

Also, I believe we've found the first contractors who work on Saturday - our siding team!

Since drywall will be going up on Monday, we decided to take a ton of pictures of the interior so we'd be able to see where the ductwork, plumbing, and wiring all ran.

Doug's office, and a view from the dining room to the kitchen and laundry room.

The stairs, looking from the first-floor bathroom (L), and the living room (R). This was one of the very few 'trouble spots' - the area right in front of the steps going downstairs was a bit squeaky, so they'll put some shims below it and add a few nails for good measure.

The jacuzzi in the master bath. The windows right above it are the swing-out crank type, and it overlooks our back yard and the wildlife preserve behind our property.

The shower in the master bath. The triangular nook that you can barely see on the right of the picture has an empty space below it that is just covered with drywall. At some point, I'll build a small cabinet here to store bath salts and soap for the tub.

I also added some additional extras to the house - three additional ethernet/data ports and wiring for an in-speaker Surround sound system in the living room.

Honestly, I hate our structured wiring contractors - they would've charged me well over $700 to do what I did for seventy five bucks for a 1000 foot spool of Cat5e cable, three .47 cent wall boxes, and a Saturday morning in 'sweat equity'. Each data port alone from our wiring company costs a ridiculous $275. Take that, structured wiring contractors!

We've got the shingles!

Edit: See our walkthrough video (high-speed internet connections only!)

Wow, a ton of work got done - a nice little Christmas present from our builder to us. The shingles are on, and all the windows are in!

And now for the real treat: the first shots of the interior!
